What to do if you lose your pet
Act quickly and stay calm. Most lost pets are found close to home, and the first few hours matter most.
In the first hour
Search close to home
- Search your street and the streets nearby. Check under cars, in bushes, garages, sheds and stairwells. Go out again at dawn and dusk, when it is quiet and pets are more likely to move.
- Call their name calmly and shake a treat bag or food bowl. Shouting can make a scared pet hide.
- Leave the door or gate open if it is safe, with their bed, a worn piece of your clothing and water outside. Familiar smells help them find their way back.
The same day
Spread the word
- Report your pet on Find My Pet Cyprus. Add clear photos and drop a pin on the map where they were last seen, so anyone searching nearby can see your listing. Report a missing pet
- Call every vet clinic in your area and the areas next to it. People often take a found or injured animal straight to the nearest vet. Ask: “Has anyone brought in a dog or cat matching this description?” Leave your number and a photo, and call back every couple of days. Find vets near you
- Check your microchip details. Ask your vet to make sure the chip is registered with your current phone number. A chip only helps if the details are up to date.
Over the next few days
Keep looking
- Make a poster from your listing in one click, and put it up at local shops, kiosks, vet clinics and lamp posts near where your pet went missing.
- Share your listing in local Facebook and WhatsApp groups, with the link so people can see updates.
- Contact animal shelters and welfare groups in your district.
- Check found pets on this site every day, searching within 3 to 10 km. Pets can travel further than you expect. See found pets
- Talk to people who are out early, such as dog walkers, postmen, delivery drivers and shopkeepers. Ask neighbours to check their gardens and any camera footage.
Watch out for scams. Never send money to someone who says they have your pet before you have seen it. Meet in a public place and take someone with you.
