What to do if you find a pet

Thank you for helping. Most found pets have a family looking for them, and a few simple steps can get them home quickly.

If you have the animal

Keep it safe and find the owner

  1. Check for a collar or tag. If there is a phone number, call the owner straight away.
  2. Give it water and a quiet space. Offer only a little plain food at first, as a stressed animal can get an upset stomach. Keep it apart from your own pets until a vet has checked it.
  3. Take it to the nearest vet to scan for a microchip. This is the fastest way to find the owner. The vet can also tell you if it needs urgent care.
  4. Report it on Find My Pet Cyprus. Add clear photos and drop a pin where you found it. Owners check found pets first. Report a found pet
  5. Tell other vet clinics in the area. Owners often ring vets first, so leave your number and a description. Find vets near you
  6. Check missing pets near you, searching within 3 to 10 km. The owner may already be looking. See missing pets
  7. Make a poster from your listing and put it up near where you found the animal. Owners usually search close to where their pet went missing.
  8. Share your listing in local Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
  9. If you cannot keep it, contact animal shelters and welfare groups in your district. Do not release it somewhere else, as that makes it much harder for the owner to find it.

If you saw it but could not catch it

Report the sighting

  1. Report it straight away on Find My Pet Cyprus. Put the exact spot on the map and say in the description when you saw it and which way it went. Even a blurry photo helps.
  2. Check missing pets nearby. If it matches one, contact the owner directly with where and when you saw it.
  3. Tell local vet clinics in case the owner calls them.
  4. Do not chase it. Chasing can push a scared animal into traffic or further away. If you see it again, report the new sighting.

Before handing a pet over, check it is the real owner. Ask for photos of them with the pet, vet records, or a detail that is not in your listing, such as a marking or the name it answers to. Never pay or accept money to return a pet. Meet in a public place.
